Employee Development

Carter Lumber recognizes the importance of employee development and training programs; they are key factors in helping employees to succeed. That is why we have created The Yard University. The Yard University is Carter Lumber's commitment to helping employees build a career with our company. Our Yard University Website is the centralized location for all online training classes, classroom training enrollment, tracking and more! The following programs are a few examples of the training that The Yard University offers:
New Employee Orientation
All new employees are required to complete a new-employee orientation to learn the basics of our industry and about the programs that Carter Lumber offers its customers. Orientation is designed specifically by position, so that new employees are given the relevant tools for their job. This enables every employee, from entry-level to management, to build their career with us.
DVD Training
Designed for the beginner, this training can be conducted at the store or at the employee’s leisure. We cover topics such as Pole Barns, Garages, Safety, Decks, Customer Service, Backyard Barns and much more, through a series of DVDs designed to give you a basic understanding of each.
Online Training
Housed on The Yard University website, we offer our employees over 300 topics online that are specific to our industry, including skills training, on-the-job worksheets, best practices and product training.
Classroom Training
We are constantly conducting centralized classes for all types of employees to attend. These classes are a little more advanced and include hands-on training and role-playing. Some of the classes that we offer include: Customer Service, Selling Skills, Estimating Barns and Garages, Leadership Skills, Home Estimating, and a variety of classes to utilize our point-of-sale system to its fullest.
Vendor Training
Our vendors provide us with publications, videos, in-store training and online classes. Our vendors are committed in ensuring our employees have the product knowledge needed to successfully service the customer.
