Carter Lumber History: The Story Goes On

Dear Prospective Employee,

In 1932, my grandfather, Warren E. Carter, along with T. Neil Jones, founded the Carter-Jones Lumber Company in Akron, Ohio. The founding idea behind the company was to operate a lumberyard that helps our customers grow their business, while providing each employee with the opportunity to build a long-lasting career. In 1937, Mr. Jones decided to leave the business and W.E. continued to guide the company.

In the mid-1950's the concept of cash-and-carry lumber was introduced, and the stores were named Cashway Lumber. The name Carter Lumber was eventually adopted for all stores.

Today, W.E.'s vision for the company remains strong and we've grown to become one of the top twenty building materials retailers in the nation. Our 3,000 employees continue to build upon the original ideas established nearly a century ago. I look forward to our future employees carrying on the same vision as we do today.
