High School Students Chosen For Scholarship

Carter Lumber proudly announces the first-ever recipients of the W. E. Carter Scholarship, named in honor of Carter Lumber’s founder, W.E. Carter. Dennis Hays of Eaton High School and Nicholas Arnold of Warren High School were selected from more than 150 applicants to receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Carter Lumber partnered with the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) organization and established the scholarships to recognize their long-standing relationship with the Ohio agricultural community. Scholarship applicants were required to be active members of Ohio FFA chapters with plans to attend a post-secondary institution.

Hays, a resident of Camden whose parents run a full-time farm, began his involvement with the local agricultural community nine years ago through 4-H. He has been an active member of his local FFA chapter for his four years at Eaton, serving as chapter vice-president during his senior year. Hays maintains a 3.4 GPA with activities that include rank as an Eagle Scout; a member of the drama club, band, choir and Hi-Y; and a member of the Fairhaven Community Church. Hays plans to pursue an Agricultural Engineering degree at Berea College with hopes of managing his own farm in the future.

Arnold, a resident of Fleming, has been actively involved with the Warren FFA chapter since his freshman year. He has served three of his years as a chapter officer, including vice president, and one as district director. His leadership abilities earned him state-level recognition and a position as delegate to the national convention. Arnold maintains a 3.7 GPA with activities that include serving as president of the Warren Spanish Club, president of the Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society member, and World Affairs Seminar attendee. Selected to the International Affairs Scholars program, Arnold plans to pursue a political science degree at The Ohio State University with the hopes of working for an agricultural lobbying firm or government agency.

"We are pleased to award these scholarships to such bright and promising students," states Neil Sackett, president of Carter Lumber and grandson to W. E. Carter. "Their dedication to FFA and the agricultural community is to be commended. My grandfather always made it a priority to give back to our local communities and this scholarship truly honors that commitment."
