Planning
Kitchen planning is essential in kitchen design. But before you begin choosing your cabinets and appliances, think about what you want in a new kitchen. Put together a wish list to help determine your needs.
Assess Your Current Space
- How many people use the kitchen at the same time? How many primary cooks?
- How much time is spent in the kitchen?
- How much storage space do you need? Take careful inventory of all items you now store in your kitchen.
- Do you entertain in your kitchen?
- Do you have a kitchen table or a separate dining area? How many people need to be seated in the kitchen?
- Which activities take place in the kitchen – baking, homework, hobbies, work?
Make A List Of Problems In Your Existing Kitchen
- What do you like?
- What don't you like?
- Do you need more countertop space?
- Do you need more storage space?
- Is the layout efficient?
Decide What You Want To Revise Or Add
- What items are currently stored elsewhere that you want to add to the kitchen?
- What items would you like to store differently in a drawer versus on a shelf?
- Do you want to add an island, desk space, skylights, decorative shelves or an eating area?
- What do you want to replace – cabinets, countertops, appliances?
Budget
Once you've determined your needs, you need to establish a budget for your kitchen project. You need to estimate potential costs in each area so that you can prioritize and decide what you want most. A Carter Lumber associate can assist you with estimating some of the costs associated with your kitchen planning project.
