Deck Accessories
Make sure your outdoor living space is decked out in a style that is inviting as well as functional. Whether you've just built a new deck or want to spruce up your existing deck, deck accessories can bring this extended living space to life.
Existing Decks
Before you begin adding or replacing deck accessories, take the time to clean and renew existing wood surfaces.
Trimming Your Deck
With so many wooden and vinyl deck accessories to choose from, designs are unlimited. Railings, posts, steps and skirting offer great opportunity to use your imagination and add a unique look to your deck.
- Top off post caps with decorative toppers or finials.
- Top posts with stylish wood or vinyl caps.
- Railings are the most prominent visual element in a deck. Choose ornamental wood railings to add visual interest. Match materials to your house and landscape such as fencing, and trim style and color.
- Steps provide more than access to a house or yard. Stairways can separate different levels, serve as seating and add pattern to a decks overall shape. As a rule, steps and stairs should be at least 36 inches wide, 48 inches if you want two people to be able to pass each other comfortably.
- Conceal the space between your deck's perimeter and the ground below by installing patterned lattice panels.
Don't forget about built-in elements that provide functionality as well as appeal. Determine what kinds of activities you'll be doing on your deck — dining, relaxing, grilling, etc. Consider options like seating areas, cabinets and cooking centers. Enhance these areas with paint, stain and hardware.
Deck-orating
- Select furniture that complements the colors, lines and elements from other accessories, including your yard and house.
- Choose furniture that is appropriately scaled for your deck and seats the required number of people.
- Add plants and flowers for color and definition. Consider freestanding planters, railing planters and posts or overhangs for hanging baskets.
- Don't forget about candles and torches to provide just the right amount of night light and relief from pesky insects.
