Before You Build
Think of your deck as another room in your house. You'll enjoy the finished results more if you remember to keep your deck project plans comfortable and functional, right from the start.
- Check your local zoning ordinances and apply for a permit. They'll point out important safety factors, such as the width of joist spans (typically 24" o.c.) and the spacing for balusters.
- Call before you dig to locate any underground service:

- Before you start, bring a blueprint (or accurate measurements) of your house to The Yard so we can help provide a realistic list of deck materials and costs.
- Determine how you want to use your deck. This will affect the size and shape. Will you add a table and chairs? How many people will you want to seat? Do you need room for a grill? Do you want to add planters or hanging baskets? Do you need decorative lights and power outlets?
- Consider deck maintenance before you build. Are you willing to clean and seal your deck routinely to preserve the wood, or would you rather invest up-front in composite decking materials and vinyl railings?
