Before You Build
Before you start, take a long, hard look at your garage building plans. What will you keep in your garage? How functional do you want it to be?
By planning ahead, you'll make the right decisions and be truly satisfied with the results. Here are a few things to consider:
- Get organized! Sort through all the items you want to store from lawn equipment to snow shovels and kids' toys and determine how much space you need for them.
- Decide whether or not you want to include shelving, cabinets, workbenches, pegboards for tools, or hanging brackets for things like bikes.
- Consider the placement of windows to allow for maximum natural light.
- Think about options like electrical outlets (how many and where should they be placed), and whether or not you need to add a heating and ventilation system.
- Plan your driveway so there is a minimum 10' radius for turns and a minimum width of 10' for one car and 16' for two cars.
- Check your local zoning restrictions.
- Call before you dig to locate any underground service:
